Quemada Corozal:
This was an important Preclassic and Classic
(600 BC to 800 AD) ceremonial center, that had a
strong relation with
Tikal, as the lack of
Occupation evidence during the Tikal hiatus (Middle
Classic ) shows. The site has some 6 Sq. Km.
area. Located 8 Km. north of the Zapote village
and south from Yaxhá lagoon, the
architecture in this site
includess a
Ball Court and a
group E on the Acropolis,
several Plazas and on Plaza A Stucco sculptures
in a bench of a structure, representing the
Kan
cross and the god serpent Chichan, it has been
dated in the Early Classic, and were covered by
a Middle classic Platform. ( see drawing
below). A Burial was found on the Acropolis
plaza B (see drawing below). To the south is the
Tallest Pyramid of the site aligned to the E
group, it also has 2 Palaces. This site is
heavily looted, so only 2 Sculptured monuments (Stelas)
have been found along with ceramics and
obsidian knives mainly from the terminal Classic
in the excavations on 2004.

Bajo la Justa, (23 sq. Miles). Each
yellow area has archeological remains, note the
square below
(Aguada Maya), North and Central
Petén´s 40% area are bajos. (Wetlands).
Poza Maya: It
is located near the center of the bajo la Justa,
5 km north of
Yaxhá and 8 km south of
Nakúm. The
Poza Maya site occupies a high ridge covered by
tall forest that rises from the bajo. About 40
large structures arranged around nine courtyards
form the center of the site. Test pits dug by
Guatemalan archaeologists in the plazas
encountered multiple earlier floors and as much
as 7 m of fill over an extensive area. The size
of the structures (up to 20 m high), the
presence of vaulted masonry architecture, and
the enormous investment of labor in raising
plazas suggest that Poza Maya was an
organizational center for whatever activities
took place in the Bajo la Justa. Partial
exploration of a lower section of the ridge in
May 1995 discovered 10 small structures, but it
has not been determined how extensive this
"lower class" occupation was. If the Bajo la
Justa was an unutilized wasteland, it is hard to
imagine why a site of this size and complexity
was in its center. A large water reservoir,
square shaped, 250 Mt. long in each side,
(Aguada Maya) is 1 Km. to the South.
Cara Fea: Its a
second rank site and an example of a bajo
community, was discovered on 1995. The site
occupies another ridge of upland forest within
the Bajo la Justa about 2 km from the Poza Maya
site. In stark contrast to the very large
monumental
architecture
at Poza Maya, the Cara
Fea site consists of about 20 smaller structures
in eight patio groups. An unusually large number
of chultuns at the site may be an indication of
some special storage activity.
