Holtún
Holtún is Located on the road to
Yaxhá from Flores, and 10 minutes
walking from the main paved highway,
Holtún is a mid size, Classic Maya
site that was under
Tikal's
dominance . Holtún means "Head of stone" or
"Stone Hole", was occupied from 300 to
890 AD. The site counts with a group
of triadic pattern, the
Acropolis with pyramids and one
ball
court. A looter's trench in one of the buildings left
exposed two large masks, one zoomorphous
and another anthropomorphous. In the
substructure it was possible to
observe other
large masks
painted in
red, but now the access tunnel is
closed to avoid the deterioration of
stuccos, and can be visited with the
guards permit.
